Since arriving in Basel, Annelise Ellars has studied at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, completing her Master’s degree in Baroque Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Ulrike Hofbauer, and her second Master’s in Medieval Vocal and Harp Performance with Kate Dineen and Claire Piganiol. She has had the distinction of appearing in various festivals across Europe, including the renowned Monteverdi Festival in Italy, the celebrated Utrecht Festival Oude Muziek in the Netherlands, the pioneering Alte Musik Fest Friedenau in Germany, and the highly respected Festival Voix et Route Romane in France. She has appeared with the distinguished ReRenaissance concert series, as well as with the ensembles Contre le Temps, Musica Manufacta and her duo Syrens, in which she explores the expressive possibilities of self-accompaniment. As a harpist, Annelise enjoys performing a wide range of repertoire including large orchestral works and musicals, but particularly enjoys the raw and percussive sounds of the gothic bray harps. As a singer, she is adept at interpreting widely varying styles from Machaut to Mozart, and finds particular pleasure in the interwoven textures of Renaissance polyphony.

The ensemble Syrens specializes in the art of storytelling, and combines timeless narratives with performance practices from then and now. Liane Sadler and Annelise Ellars met during their studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Switzerland) and developed a unique combined performance style inspired by their interdisciplinary skills. They use the expressive possibilities of their instruments (medieval flutes and harps) and expand them through singing, acting and carefully thought through dramaturgy. The ensemble debuted in 2022 with several appearances at the Oude Muziek Festival in Utrecht and received standing ovations, followed by a popular concert at the Alte Musik Fest Friedenau in Berlin. They most recently returned to the Oude Muziek Festival 2023, playing again to a sold out audience, and continue to perform in concert series in Switzerland. In 2024 they look forward to performing at the Festival Europäische Kirchenmusik Schwäbisch Gmünd.
